Homework / Independent Study

It is important that pupils get in the habit of regular independent study to prepare them for post-16 study and adulthood. We encourage students to take responsibility for managing their own time although your help in ensuring that they allocate time to homework is appreciated.

DFE Teachers’ Standards state: “[Teachers] set homework and plan other out-of-class activities to consolidate and extend the knowledge and understanding pupils have acquired.” It is Sutton’s policy that homework from the three core subjects of Mathematics, Science and English should be set on a weekly basis. In addition to our English, Maths and Science homework, it should be recognised that other subjects may set project related homework tasks and activities, but that these are less structured in their nature and are not an every week expectation. For students who struggle to complete homework at home, or need access to a computer, we also run a staffed homework club at lunchtime.

Within core subjects homework is set as follows

English:

Homework is set once weekly on Fridays; this may take the form of SAM Learning homework, a written task, research or a skills task. Students are also issued with a school reading book or independent reader; please support them by encouraging them to read regularly at home. Please ensure their reading record is completed and returned with the book each week so that books can be changed as appropriate; lost or damaged booked will need to be paid for.
