Phase Focus

This fortnight we bring you updates from our Trees phase.

Welcome to this edition of our Trees Phase newsletter, where we celebrate the creativity, learning, and exciting experiences of our students!

In the world of photography and art, 7T1 explored digital editing by using Pixlr to enhance their pictures, while 7T2 experimented with photographic images on an iPad, learning how technology can transform an image. Meanwhile, 8T3 embraced landscape photography, capturing the beauty of their surroundings before indulging in a delicious pancake-making session. Artistic inspiration continued to flourish as 7T3 and 8T4 crafted model hands in the style of renowned sculptor Marc Quinn. Across the phase, students explored sculptures inspired by Barbara Hepworth, creating their own unique interpretations of her work. As part of their humanities studies, 7T3, 7T4, and 8T4 designed and sculpted dragons, bringing mythology and creativity together in an exciting project. In celebration of Ramadan, students from 7T4, 8T4, and 7T3 worked on crafting intricate lanterns, adding a festive touch to their studies. The creative momentum extended to robotics, with 7T4, 8T4, and 7T3 building robots using recycled materials, inspired by the work of artist Michelle Reader.

Exciting trips and outdoor adventures also enriched the learning experience. 8T4 embarked on an inspiring visit to Himley, where they participated in a Woodland Art experience, drawing inspiration from nature. 7T2 took a delightful trip to the Garden Centre, exploring a variety of plants and learning about their care. Meanwhile, 7T1 had the opportunity to visit Cosford, broadening their horizons with an engaging and educational experience. Outdoor learning took on a delicious twist as 7T3 gathered around a fire to toast marshmallows, enjoying a moment of warmth and camaraderie.

Science lessons were filled with hands-on excitement, particularly for 8T2 and 8T3, who explored the fascinating world of skeletons. 8T2 took this a step further by studying and creating skeleton dogs, blending scientific knowledge with artistic creativity. 7T1 delved into aerodynamics by constructing helicopters, experimenting with motion and design to understand the principles of flight.

Technology and programming were also at the forefront of learning, with 7T1 and 7T2 honing their coding skills by programming Bee Bots. These interactive robots allowed students to engage with basic programming concepts in a fun and practical way.

The school community was also treated to some special visits. Raven’s Rescue made an appearance for 8T2 and 8T3, giving students insight into the important work of animal rescue. In a particularly memorable moment, Joan Burton MBE visited the school and personally thanked students for their contributions, leaving a lasting impression on all who met her. Meanwhile, 8T1 spread joy beyond the school walls with a heart-warming visit to a local care home, where their kindness and creativity brought smiles to residents’ faces.

Culinary adventures were a highlight across the phase. 8T1 delighted in making and enjoying s’mores, while 7T4 experimented with blending ingredients to create delicious smoothies. They weren’t alone in their smoothie-making endeavours—8T2 and 8T3 also took part in crafting these nutritious drinks. 7T1 and 7T2 explored fresh flavours by assembling colourful fruit kebabs alongside their smoothie creations. A special cake and craft day provided 7T2 with the chance to combine artistic expression with culinary delights, fostering creativity in multiple ways. And, of course, no celebration would be complete without pancakes—students across the phase enjoyed making and eating this sweet treat.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication in all these activities. Their hard work and curiosity continue to make Trees Phase a vibrant and inspiring place to learn. Stay tuned for more updates in our next newsletter!

Whole school events

We recently held a Communication Workshop at school, led by Mrs. Hudson, our Speech and Language Therapist. The event focused on building and strengthening the bridge between home and school, reassuring parents that we are actively working on meeting our pupils' communication needs.

During the workshop, we introduced Widgit symbols and other communication aids, as well as Aided Language Displays. ALD’S systems, are to support our students in expressing their thoughts, needs, and emotions. Parents and children had the opportunity to use ALD’S to make and decorate cupcakes and create Easter baskets, making communication both meaningful and fun!

It was truly wonderful to see the children leading their parents into the world of ALD’S and communication, showcasing their skills and confidence. The workshop also provided a fantastic opportunity for parents to connect, form support networks, and bond with one another.

As a specialist school, we use ALD’S and Widgit symbols throughout the school to support communication across all settings. To help maintain that home-to-school connection, parents can also subscribe to Widgit Online for £9 per month. This allows you to create your own ALD’S resources at home for things like bedtime routines, daily planners, and schedules.

Beyond Sutton

Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2025

At Sutton school, we are proud to support Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2025, taking place from March 17th – 23rd. This is a time to recognise, celebrate, and embrace the strengths of those who think, learn, and experience the world in unique ways.

As a special school, we are dedicated to creating an environment where every child’s individual needs, abilities, and perspectives are valued and supported. We recognise that neurodivergent individuals—such as those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences—bring creativity, innovation, and unique strengths to our school and society.

Together, we continue to build a community where diversity is embraced, differences are respected, and every child is empowered to succeed in their own way.

Let’s celebrate thinking differently—because our differences are what make us stronger!
