Wider Life Skills

All pupils at Sutton School have access to a comprehensive Life Skills curriculum throughout their five years at school, providing regular opportunities to develop essential skills for everyday life. The programme is designed to equip pupils with the practical knowledge, confidence, and independence they need to thrive both now and in the future.

The Life Skills curriculum covers a wide range of focus areas, including:

  • Personal Hygiene – Developing routines for personal care, grooming, and self-maintenance to promote confidence, health, and independence.

  • Keeping Safe – Understanding personal safety, online safety, road safety, and how to make safe choices in a variety of environments.

  • Managing Money – Learning to budget, shop, and make financial decisions, supporting independence and real-world skills.

  • Relationships and Families – Building healthy relationships, understanding emotions, and learning about respect, boundaries, and positive social interactions.

  • Sun, Water, and Travel Safety – Learning how to stay safe outdoors, including sun protection, water safety, and navigating transport safely.

  • Household Management – Gaining practical skills such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and maintaining personal and shared spaces.

  • Cooking and Nutrition – Planning, preparing, and cooking meals, promoting healthy eating and practical independence.

  • Digital Literacy – Using technology safely and effectively to support learning, communication, and independent living.

  • Decision-Making and Problem-Solving – Learning to make informed choices, take responsibility, and manage challenges in everyday situations.

In addition to these core areas, pupils are encouraged to participate in wider enrichment activities that support personal development, including volunteering, outdoor learning, and community projects. These experiences help pupils develop resilience, self-confidence, social skills, and a sense of responsibility, while also fostering independence and preparation for adulthood.

The curriculum is flexible and tailored to meet individual needs, ensuring that every pupil can develop skills at their own pace. By embedding these opportunities across the school year, Sutton School ensures that pupils are well-prepared to make positive choices, engage confidently with the wider community, and successfully transition into further education, employment, and independent living.
