Pupils at Sutton School are actively supported to engage in civic life and make a positive contribution to their community. Through our Duke of Edinburgh Programme, every pupil participates in at least one volunteering project each year, ensuring that all pupils experience meaningful opportunities to contribute to society and understand their role as active citizens.
Volunteering projects are carefully planned to meet pupils’ individual needs, interests, and abilities. These have included supporting homeless charities, visiting care homes to spend time with elderly residents, taking part in community improvement initiatives, leading and supporting sports activities, and contributing to reading and mentoring programmes. These experiences enable pupils to engage with a range of community groups and develop an understanding of social responsibility.
Through sustained involvement in volunteering, pupils develop a strong sense of civic engagement, learning about respect, equality, and the importance of contributing to the common good. Pupils are supported to take responsibility, work collaboratively, and reflect on the impact of their actions on others. These opportunities help pupils to build empathy, confidence, communication skills, and independence.
Staff provide structured guidance and appropriate support to ensure that all pupils can access and succeed in volunteering activities. As a result, pupils gain valuable life skills, increased self-esteem, and a deeper understanding of democratic values and community participation, supporting their preparation for adulthood and positive engagement in society.
