We organise our classes into three phases.
All pupils begin their time at Sutton in the Trees phase during Years 7 and 8.
In Years 9, 10 and 11, pupils move into either the Hills or Rivers phase. In line with our motto, ‘Towards Independence’, pupils in the Rivers phase follow a timetable with greater subject specialism and mobility. This supports their likely progression into post-16 study at a local college.
Our phase names reflect pupils’ developmental journey. During Years 7 and 8, Trees pupils are ‘putting down roots’. Hills pupils are largely taught by their form group teachers, providing a more static and consistent structure. Rivers pupils, by contrast, move more fluidly between different teaching teams for some subject areas, mirroring the increased independence expected in later study.

Our intent is to provide every member of the school community with the opportunity to achieve his or her true potential and ambitions. This is achieved through a broad, balanced curriculum matched to pupil’s individual needs including entitlement to the National Curriculum. The environment we create is stimulating and challenging yet supportive, secure and caring. Our curriculum is best defined through our motto ‘Safe, Happy, Learning > Towards Independence’. Pupils are taught in an atmosphere of positive recognition where each person’s individuality and talents receive encouragement and nurture.

Our pupils come to Sutton School with varying levels of prior attainment. In response to pupil’s individual needs we identify their most appropriate learning route and as a result can offer a range of qualifications targeted at success and independence by Y11.
