Computing

Curriculum Intent

Pupils at Sutton are taught Computing  as part of the National Curriculum throughout years 7 to 11 guided by NCFE Teach Computing.

In Rivers and Hills pupils have the opportunity to achieve a Functional Skills qualification where it is deemed appropriate, practical and achievable.

Some pupils in some cohorts may be given the opportunity to study level 1 qualifications in Computer Science where appropriate, practical and achievable.

It remains the goal at Sutton for pupils to leave with the appropriate skills to allow them to succeed and thrive in the modern world, interpret and use media and understands the social, moral and ethical uses of technology.

Curriculum Implementation

Pupils at Sutton are taught at an appropriate level based on equivalent year group progress covering content potentially from year 1 to year 11. Delivery content is guided by the National Curriculum Programmes of Study and selected by the class teacher, with guidance from the subject lead. Teachers remain mindful of the breadth of coverage to ensure key areas are covered.

It is not expected for pupils to cover all of the areas in as great a depth as a mainstream setting would since many pupils enter Sutton working at equivalent to year 1 progress levels, however, the intent is to provide as broad experience as the pupils are capable of and to progress pupils’ achievement from the starting point as far as possible. Many of the skills are revisited to embed learning and understanding.

Teachers deliver lessons using the resources provided by the school, based around the Teach Computing programme, part funded by the DFE and provided free to schools. This includes all resources in an easy to follow format, reducing workload on teachers.

In Hills and Rivers phase pupils will take Functional Skills ICT levels 1-3.

The scope for providing a higher-level qualification such as OCR Entry level and level 1 lies within the ability of the particular cohort.

E-Safety is delivered as part of Core Studies, however, the importance of staying safe online is at the front of any IT experiences the our pupils engage in.

Impact

Pupils at Sutton receive a broad learning experience in computing, at a level appropriate to their ability. This give them the skills and confidence to help them access the wider world of technology, be it at home, being safe with social media or taking the next steps into the world of work.

Staff are supported in their delivery, confident that the content is correct, and the right opportunities are provided to the pupils.
