This half term has certainly brought its challenges — from snowy mornings to navigating a particularly unpleasant virus that affected many of our families and staff. However, what has stood out most is the determination, resilience and perseverance shown by our children. Despite the disruptions, they have continued to show up, try their best and support one another.

We have seen so many examples of our school motto in action — safe, happy learning.
This week we proudly took part in Anti-Bullying Week, joining thousands of schools across the country to raise awareness and show our support for kindness, respect, and inclusion.

To kick off the week, staff and pupils wore odd socks — a fun and colourful way to celebrate what makes each of us unique. The message behind Odd Socks Day is simple: everyone is different, and that’s something to be proud of!

As a SEN school, inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. Our pupils come from a wide range of backgrounds, needs, and communities, and we are incredibly proud of how they support and celebrate one another. At our school, we believe that understanding and acceptance are key to building a community where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

This week has been a reminder that small acts of kindness make a big difference — and that together, we can continue to make our school a place where everyone feels they belong.

Social Media Kindness Day 2025: Spreading Positivity Online and Beyond

At our school, we were proud to take part in Social Media Kindness Day 2025, a national campaign that reminds us all of the importance of being kind online. In a world where so much of our communication takes place through screens, this day serves as a powerful reminder that our words and actions — both online and offline — can have a lasting impact.

In school we explore the theme of kindness and digital responsibility through RSHE lessons, parental workshops, and home–school conversations. Our Young Persons Officer has also delivered and continues to deliver engaging talks on the importance of showing kindness online and the effects that negative online behaviour can have — not just on others, but also on our own mental and physical wellbeing.

We continue to promote positive online behaviour by encouraging pupils to think before they post, use social media responsibly, and seek help whenever they feel worried or upset about something they’ve seen or experienced online.

In school, every child knows they can speak to any trusted adult about concerns related to social media. They also know that the Safe and Wellbeing Hub Team are always available to listen, support, and guide them.

Together, we’re helping our pupils build a safer, kinder online community — one message at a time.

Children in Need 2025: Supporting a Cause That Puts Children First

This week, our school proudly supported BBC Children in Need 2025 — a charity that has been making a difference in young people’s lives for generations. This long-standing and much-loved charity works tirelessly to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive, no matter their background or circumstance.

At our school, we share the same child-centred approach that Children in Need champions. Everything we do focuses on understanding and meeting the individual needs of our pupils, supporting their wellbeing, and helping them reach their full potential. It’s a cause that truly reflects our own ethos of care, inclusion, and compassion.

We encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more about this fantastic charity and the incredible work it continues to do for children and families across the UK. If you are able to support or donate, even in a small way, it can make a big difference to a child’s life.

World Culture Day 2025: Celebrating India in All Its Colour and Magic

This term, our school celebrated World Culture Day, and the country of focus was India. It was a truly immersive and magical experience for our pupils and staff, offering a wonderful opportunity to explore the rich traditions, flavours, and sounds of this incredible country.

The day was filled with excitement as children and staff alike tasted native Indian foods, including the nation’s favourite dish in Britain — chicken tikka masala! Pupils also enjoyed learning key Hindi phrases, listening to vibrant Indian music, and discovering fascinating facts about India’s culture and heritage.

Events like World Culture Day are about much more than just fun — they open children’s minds to the incredible diversity of the world. For many pupils, this is a rare opportunity to experience a culture they may not normally encounter, helping to remove ignorance and challenge stigma. By learning about and celebrating different cultures, our children grow in understanding, empathy, and respect for others.

It was a wonderful day, full of curiosity, laughter, and learning, and a reminder of how embracing diversity enriches our school community.

7T23 Parental Woodland Engagement Session

Last week, our 7T23 class enjoyed a fantastic woodland engagement session with their parents. It was wonderful to see families working alongside their children, exploring the outdoors, and taking part in hands-on activities together.

Sessions like these are more than just fun — they help to strengthen home–school relationships and provide opportunities for parents to engage directly with their child’s learning in a meaningful way. Activities in natural settings also support communication, teamwork, confidence, and wellbeing, showing just how beneficial these experiences are for both children and families.

We are so grateful to all the parents who joined us and look forward to hosting more woodland sessions in the future

Welcome back to another fantastic edition of Phase News at Sutton School!
We are so happy to see that our Rivers pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 have settled back in brilliantly. Everyone has shown determination, resilience and followed our school motto: Safe, Happy, Learning Towards Independence.

Here’s what we’ve been up to so far in these amazing first few weeks...

9R1

9R1 have settled into Rivers Phase amazingly well and are already showing real confidence and determination. They have made great progress in every subject – especially during Library time! Lots of pupils have been volunteering to help clean and organise the library, which will go towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

We are incredibly proud of 9R1 for being brilliant role models for the younger years. We can’t wait to see them grow even more over the next few weeks!

9R2

9R2 have also made a great start and have shown fantastic resilience while settling in. In Life Skills, they made hot chocolate independently, and in Maths they played brilliant place value dice games. During Duke of Edinburgh, they learnt how to play dominoes as part of building teamwork and strategy skills.

We are very proud of 9R2 and know they will do amazingly well as they work towards their qualifications. Keep it up, 9R2!

10R1

10R1 have had a strong and focused start. In English they have been reading Boy in the Tower, exploring plot and character and in Maths they have been preparing ahead for their GCSE and Functional Skills exams. During Pathways, they have been learning about Responding to an Incident, and in Core Studies they have been exploring what romantic relationships are in a mature and thoughtful way.

A brilliant week from 10R1!

10R2

10R2 have also done fantastically. In English, they have been exploring The Boy in the Tower and have practised recounting the story confidently. They have started researching real job opportunities linked to their pathway, which will support their future qualifications and careers. In Maths they have been working on fractions through interactive learning and have already made great progress.

We’re very excited to see how much 10R2 achieve this year!

11R1

11R1 have had an incredible start. They visited Brierley Hill Fire Station to learn about fire safety and firefighter equipment. They now know what to do in an emergency and were fully engaged throughout the visit. They began the year with 100% attendance, which is amazing!

We are excited to see Year 11 rise to every challenge ahead as they prepare for their GCSEs. Keep up the excellent work, 11R1!

11R2

They have been working really hard in all of their lessons and have shown brilliant focus since the start of term. In Art, they have produced some amazing work inspired by Andy Warhol, exploring Pop Art and developing their own creative styles.

During their Motor Vehicle Studies pathway, they have been learning how to use tools safely and professionally, showing great maturity and responsibility in a workshop environment.

We are really proud of 11R2 and the fantastic effort they are putting into their learning!

Special Fact of the Week: Did you know? You are approximately one centimetre taller in the morning than at night because your spine decompresses while you sleep.

This has been the Sutton News Team.
We’ll be back soon with more updates — visit our school website and join us for what is sure to be a remarkable and memorable year!

Welcome Back from the Safe & Wellbeing Hub

We would like to welcome all of our families back to school after the long summer break. We know that returning to routines can sometimes feel challenging, and that some of our children may be experiencing anxiety as they settle back into school life.

For our SEN children, one of the most effective ways to ease anxiety is by supporting them to develop a good, consistent sleep routine. This helps them to feel more settled and ready for the school day. For further advice and resources on supporting children with anxiety, Barnardo’s has some helpful guidance, which you can find here: Barnardo’s Anxiety Support

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank parents and carers for your collaboration last year. Together, we achieved an overall school attendance of 93.16% for 2024/25. This is a fantastic achievement and shows the commitment of our school community to ensuring that attendance supports not just academic progress, but also children’s mental health and overall wellbeing.

As we move forward into this year, please remember:

Late arrivals will continue to be monitored. Any child arriving late—whether travelling independently or dropped off—will be expected to make up the missed learning time during intervention sessions after school.

Early collections will not be permitted, except in exceptional circumstances.

These steps are in place because every minute of learning matters for our children. We appreciate your continued cooperation, as this work is always done in the very best interests of your child’s learning, wellbeing, and future opportunities.

Thank you again for your ongoing support. Together, we can ensure that our children have the best start to the new school year.

Phase Focus

This fortnight we bring you Rivers

Loudmouth Theatre Company Delivers Powerful RSHE Performance for Rivers Pupils

We were delighted to welcome Loudmouth Theatre Production Company to our school this term as they delivered their impactful and engaging performance, “Calling Marcus”, to our Rivers pupils. This performance is part of the Working for Marcus programme, which has been specially tailored to meet the needs of SEN children and young people.

The session explored important aspects of Relationships, Sexual Health and Health Education (RSHE) in a way that was both captivating and age-appropriate. Through drama, discussion, and interactive delivery, our pupils were supported to understand vital safeguarding themes such as grooming, sexual consent, sexual exploitation, coercive control, and domestic abuse.

The performance also addressed complex issues including criminal exploitation, gang involvement, radicalisation, and ‘county lines’, helping pupils to understand how these dangers can impact their lives and relationships. Importantly, the session reinforced the legal implications of such issues, helping our pupils to clearly understand the difference between right and wrong.

We are proud to be part of an educational community that ensures these sensitive topics are taught with care, clarity, and relevance. Calling Marcus was not only informative—it gave our pupils the tools to recognise unsafe situations and seek help when needed, empowering them to make safe, respectful and informed choices now and in the future.

From Egg to Adventure – A Special Journey at Sutton School

Over the past few weeks, Sutton School has been lucky enough to witness something truly special – the birth and early life of our very own ducks and chickens!

From the moment the eggs were placed in the incubator, excitement rippled through the school. The children watched eagerly as the eggs began to hatch, observing the fascinating process from egg to chick and duckling. They’ve loved spending time with the animals – from checking in on them during quiet moments of reflection to watching the ducklings take their very first swim in the pond.

It has been a heart-warming and educational experience for everyone involved. Animals have always played a big role in the life of Sutton School, and this project has once again shown just how beneficial they can be – especially for our children with additional needs.

Spending time with animals can help SEN children in a number of ways, including:

Encouraging calm and reducing anxiety

Promoting empathy and responsibility

Supporting sensory regulation

Helping with communication and social interaction

Offering comfort and emotional connection in a non-judgemental way

Soon, our fluffy friends will be rehomed with a loving family who already care for chickens and ducks. To help prepare the children for this transition, we will be creating a social story that explains the move in a positive and reassuring way.

It’s been a joy to have these animals with us, and the memories made will stay with the children – and staff – for a long time to come.

This fortnight we bring you updates from our Trees phase.

Welcome to this edition of our Trees Phase newsletter, where we celebrate the creativity, learning, and exciting experiences of our students!

In the world of photography and art, 7T1 explored digital editing by using Pixlr to enhance their pictures, while 7T2 experimented with photographic images on an iPad, learning how technology can transform an image. Meanwhile, 8T3 embraced landscape photography, capturing the beauty of their surroundings before indulging in a delicious pancake-making session. Artistic inspiration continued to flourish as 7T3 and 8T4 crafted model hands in the style of renowned sculptor Marc Quinn. Across the phase, students explored sculptures inspired by Barbara Hepworth, creating their own unique interpretations of her work. As part of their humanities studies, 7T3, 7T4, and 8T4 designed and sculpted dragons, bringing mythology and creativity together in an exciting project. In celebration of Ramadan, students from 7T4, 8T4, and 7T3 worked on crafting intricate lanterns, adding a festive touch to their studies. The creative momentum extended to robotics, with 7T4, 8T4, and 7T3 building robots using recycled materials, inspired by the work of artist Michelle Reader.

Exciting trips and outdoor adventures also enriched the learning experience. 8T4 embarked on an inspiring visit to Himley, where they participated in a Woodland Art experience, drawing inspiration from nature. 7T2 took a delightful trip to the Garden Centre, exploring a variety of plants and learning about their care. Meanwhile, 7T1 had the opportunity to visit Cosford, broadening their horizons with an engaging and educational experience. Outdoor learning took on a delicious twist as 7T3 gathered around a fire to toast marshmallows, enjoying a moment of warmth and camaraderie.

Science lessons were filled with hands-on excitement, particularly for 8T2 and 8T3, who explored the fascinating world of skeletons. 8T2 took this a step further by studying and creating skeleton dogs, blending scientific knowledge with artistic creativity. 7T1 delved into aerodynamics by constructing helicopters, experimenting with motion and design to understand the principles of flight.

Technology and programming were also at the forefront of learning, with 7T1 and 7T2 honing their coding skills by programming Bee Bots. These interactive robots allowed students to engage with basic programming concepts in a fun and practical way.

The school community was also treated to some special visits. Raven’s Rescue made an appearance for 8T2 and 8T3, giving students insight into the important work of animal rescue. In a particularly memorable moment, Joan Burton MBE visited the school and personally thanked students for their contributions, leaving a lasting impression on all who met her. Meanwhile, 8T1 spread joy beyond the school walls with a heart-warming visit to a local care home, where their kindness and creativity brought smiles to residents’ faces.

Culinary adventures were a highlight across the phase. 8T1 delighted in making and enjoying s’mores, while 7T4 experimented with blending ingredients to create delicious smoothies. They weren’t alone in their smoothie-making endeavours—8T2 and 8T3 also took part in crafting these nutritious drinks. 7T1 and 7T2 explored fresh flavours by assembling colourful fruit kebabs alongside their smoothie creations. A special cake and craft day provided 7T2 with the chance to combine artistic expression with culinary delights, fostering creativity in multiple ways. And, of course, no celebration would be complete without pancakes—students across the phase enjoyed making and eating this sweet treat.

This fortnight we bring you updates from our Rivers phase.

Welcome back to another edition of the Rivers Phase Newsletter! As we journey through another busy term, we are delighted to bring you the latest news, updates, and celebrations from our school community.

Our 9R1 students have been diving into the fascinating world of sound through musical instruments! As part of their learning, they have explored the differences between longitudinal and transverse waves and discovered how sound travels from its source to the ear. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, students are developing a deeper understanding of the science behind sound, vibrations, and wave properties. We look forward to seeing their continued curiosity and enthusiasm as they explore more about the physics of sound!

In Humanities, our 9R2 students have been delving into the fascinating world of ecosystems. They have been learning about what an ecosystem is, how different components interact, and why they are essential for our planet. To showcase their understanding, students have started creating engaging and informative posters, highlighting key aspects of ecosystems. We can’t wait to see their creativity shine as they bring their learning to life.

10R1 have been working towards and completing their speaking and listening assessments. All students have worked extremely hard to ensure they receive a high mark. They have been discussing the dangers and benefits of social media and building onto prior knowledge with further research. Well done for engaging in some really insightful discussions!

10R2 have been learning about the Jewish festival Tu B Shevat in RE and finding out interesting facts about this celebration. It is a new year celebration and focuses on trees and fruits to symbolise new beginnings. During this time, people try new fruit, plant trees, and show appreciation for all the things that trees do for the environment. We have also been covering ratio and fractions in Maths and have been moving onto more challenging work using mixed fractions. As a whole group we looked at visual aids and used ‘Bitesize’ interactive Maths to help us order and compare fractions. Our next step is to look at the difference between proper and improper fractions.

11R1 have been practicing their communication skills during their careers lesson. Both in small groups and a large class group, pupils were given a topic they had to discuss. Whilst doing this, they were asked to focus on good communication by using gestures, eye contact and positivity. Everyone did a splendid job – we may have some future public speakers amongst us! In addition, we have played bingo with the residents of Hillcroft Nursing Home this week. After last week’s introductions, we all felt very much at home and are all enjoying getting to know everyone. This is enabling pupils to practice their communication skills; something they have been learning about in their careers pathway this half term. Cross-curricular learning at its best!

As part of their Duke of Edinburgh volunteering section, 11R2 have been on a visit to the Black Country Foodbank, they heavily rely on volunteers to work there, who give up their time to support and help the community in preparing essential food parcels for people in a crisis. 11R2 have also just completed their speaking and listening assessments as part of their Entry Level Certificate in English, the task was to talk about social networking and their favourite sites that they use. This was a great topic for them, as they all love social networking on their phones! All pupils did really well in their assessments.

In Core Studies, we have been exploring the vital role physical exercise plays in maintaining both our physical health and mental well-being. Through engaging activities and discussions, students in 9H1 and 10H1 have developed a deeper understanding of how movement impacts the body. They have been able to observe and recognise changes in their own bodies, particularly by noticing an increase in their pulse rate after physical activity. Did you know that the NHS recommends an average of 60 minutes of physical activity each day across the week for children? We have taken our learning outside and had great fun with a variety of PE equipment. This hands-on approach has helped pupils connect their learning with real-life experiences, reinforcing the benefits of staying active for a healthier mind and body.

In our Pathway lessons, pupils in 10H1 and 11H1 have been putting their research and practical skills to the test by exploring the product design process. They have been investigating how different products are created, considering factors such as target audiences, product types, and the steps involved in bringing a product to life. Through discussions and hands-on activities, pupils have been developing a deeper understanding of how everyday items are designed and marketed. Looking ahead, they will be applying their knowledge in an exciting real-world project—creating their own dog food biscuits! Pupils will not only be making the biscuits but also designing unique packaging to appeal to pet owners. This project will challenge them to think creatively about branding, presentation, and functionality, bringing together all the skills they have been developing in their lessons. We can't wait to see their innovative designs and delicious dog-friendly treats come to life!

Pupils in 9H1, 10H1 and 11H1 have also been enjoying their Science STEM activity over the past few weeks. They have successfully designed and created their own version of Guess Who! We are very impressed with their teamwork, engagement and problem-solving skills to create ‘Guess the Creature’, featuring a variety of animals to identify.

Pupils in 9H2 and 10H2 have been developing their communication skills by asking and answering questions all about the seaside as part of our exciting English topic, Stormy Seas,. To bring the topic to life, we held a beach experience day, where students immersed themselves in hands-on activities, including sand and water play, as well as engaging role-play scenarios. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils to deepen their understanding of seaside life while having fun.

In Maths, pupils across all classes recently completed our topic on calendars and time. Pupils explored time-telling in an interactive and creative way, using Play-Doh clocks to help them read and write the time to the hour and half past. These practical activities not only reinforced key mathematical concepts but also made learning an enjoyable and memorable experience.

In English, pupils in 9H1, 10H1, and 11H1 have been thoroughly enjoying our Modern Theatre topic, where they have been studying the play version of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. To bring the story to life, pupils have taken part in an exciting chocolate tasting session, exploring different flavors and textures while discussing how sensory experiences influence storytelling. Building on this, they have also researched careers at the Cadbury Factory, the real-life inspiration behind Willy Wonka’s magical world. As part of their writing practice, pupils honed their letter-writing skills by drafting job applications for roles within the factory. This really helped in preparing pupils for their ‘real’ writing assessments. Pupils have worked so hard to produce some wonderful pieces of writing.

Now, pupils are channeling their creativity into an exciting new challenge—designing their own unique chocolate product! They are currently working on crafting persuasive advertisements to promote their creations, using engaging language and eye-catching designs to make their sweet treats irresistible. We can't wait to see their final ideas come to life!

In addition to the wonderful learning taking place in the classroom, pupils have also engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities.

Beyond the fantastic learning happening in the classroom, pupils have also been actively involved in a range of exciting extracurricular activities.

World Book Day – Pupils celebrated their love of reading through storytelling sessions, creative book-themed activities, and even dressing up as their favorite literary characters. It was a wonderful opportunity to ignite imaginations and share a passion for books!

Sutton Stage Stars – Some of our talented pupils took to the stage, showcasing their acting and performance skills in a fantastic drama event. Their confidence and creativity truly shone through, making it a memorable experience for all involved. We must also congratulate all pupils who supported this by helping to make merchandise which was sold on the night.

After-School Clubs – From sports and arts to music and drama, our after-school clubs have provided students with enriching opportunities to develop new skills, build friendships, and explore their interests in a fun and supportive environment. These experiences have not only complemented classroom learning but have also encouraged teamwork, self-expression, and personal growth.

We are immensely proud of our students for their enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication in every activity. Their hard work and curiosity make Hills Phase a dynamic and inspiring place to learn. Stay tuned for more exciting updates in our next newsletter!

This fortnight we bring you updates from our Hills phase.

Welcome to this edition of our Hills Phase Newsletter! As we continue another exciting term, we are thrilled to share the latest updates and pupil achievements with you.

9H1 have been learning how to run a business in careers. This week as a class they decided on a group company name. Each pupil then created a company logo and as a class they voted on which logo they wanted for the company. In the next few weeks, they will be creating merchandise and sharing out business roles.

10H1 In RE, we have started to learn about Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year. This year's animal is the snake. We will be learning about how it is celebrated such as family gatherings, giving money as a gift and festivals. As a class, we visited the Buddhist Centre in Cradley Heath. It was a fantastic visit learning about the religion, culture and life as a Buddhist. A big thank you to principal teacher, Gen Kelsang Khechog for his expert guidance.

11H1 have been able to visit the local radio station, Black Country Radio, as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award. Last term, they focused on the skill of music which they thoroughly enjoyed as a topic. This term, they are learning about and taking part in volunteering and are impressed to learn that the Black Country Radio is completely run by volunteers! Some pupils in 11H1 even showed a keen interest in this, considering what it would be like to volunteer themselves.

This week 10H2 ventured out to practice crossing the road safely as part of our Careers lesson. Pupils were very sensible and listened carefully to instructions. These sessions will take place weekly in order to help pupils to develop important skills for adulthood. In Maths, we have begun our money unit, with pupils beginning to identify coins and exploring their use through role play. Pupils set up mini shops within the classroom and practised purchasing goods using the correct coins. Some pupils even began to add using coins!

Emotional health week 2025

Emotional Health Week 2025 is upon us, and as a special school, this is something we wholeheartedly support.

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week, and we rallied our students to create Hope Heroes—our very own mental health ambassadors. Their role is to promote and support mental well-being across the school, offering peer support and encouragement.

As a special school, we recognize the immense importance of mental well-being, and we are committed to fostering a supportive environment for all our students.

Safer Internet Day 2025

This week is Safer Internet Day, and as a school, we remain committed to supporting our pupils and parents through workshops that educate on the importance of online safety. Understanding how to protect children online is crucial, as the impact on their mental health and well-being can be significant.

Throughout this week, we have worked with our pupils to reinforce this message, providing them with practical tips on how to stay safe online.

Jo's Pantry

We know that half-term can be a challenging time, especially when it comes to the cost of feeding the family. That’s why we want to highlight J’s Pantry – Your Local Pantry, the first of its kind in West Bromwich, which opened on 31st March 2023.

For just £6.00 per week, members can access a weekly food shop, including fresh fruit, vegetables, and family essentials to help stock up the cupboard and fridge. See here for more information.

Trees

Trees Phase Highlights

7T4 & 8T4

During Science lessons, 7T4 and 8T4 have been exploring the signs of Autumn and created a beautiful Autumn tuff tray display to celebrate the season. They also planted a grape hyacinth in water, using a glass jar to observe its growth and changes right in the classroom—an exciting experiment to watch!

7T1

7T1 delved into the world of dental care, learning the importance of dental hygiene through hands-on activities focused on proper teeth cleaning techniques. They also had a lot of fun interviewing Mr. Twit, bringing some lively character studies into the classroom! Additionally, 7T1 participated in a treasure hunt around the school, using a site map to navigate and solve clues.

7T2

7T2 joined 7T1 for the treasure hunt, which encouraged teamwork and map-reading skills as they explored the school grounds together.

8T3

8T3 tapped into their artistic side by making clay tiles and drawing birds in their Art lessons, creating some stunning pieces for their portfolios.

7T3

7T3 got creative with leaf printing, capturing the beauty of Autumn through art. They also completed a jigsaw puzzle about the world's oceans, enriching their geographical knowledge in a fun and interactive way.

7T1 (again!)

7T1 has been busy! They also worked on their digital skills, editing photos using Pixlr, exploring how to enhance images through technology.

7T4 & 8T4 (A Special Treat)

Both classes enjoyed a delicious treat by making pizzas last week, turning their classrooms into mini pizzerias. It was a fun and tasty experience for everyone involved!

It’s been a vibrant and activity-packed term so far, with every class diving into hands-on learning and creative projects. We look forward to more adventures and discoveries in the coming weeks!
