Land-based Studies
Intent
Land-based courses provides an ideal introduction to horticulture with elements of animal care. Pupils will learn the essential skills needed to grow and care for plants, learn the importance of conservation and participate in practical projects
Implementation
As pupils progress through into Hills and Rivers, pupils have the opportunity explore their interest in Land-based studies through Pathway lessons, and work towards gaining a vocational qualification. Qualifications for this subject include, BTEC Level 1 Land-based Studies, WJEC Preparing for Work and ASDAN Personal Progress.
Through the one-year course, pupils will explore soil preparation for sowing and planting, assist with the propagation of plants from seeds, identify the range of common garden plants and weeds and assist with planting and establishing plants.
Although pupils will work independently on some tasks, there are also opportunities to work as effective team members by contributing to the pruning of plant material and keeping the work area safe and tidy.
