Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages are taught throughout the academic year; the timetable is collapsed once per term when all pupils learn about a focus country through a range of hands-on activities.

Each phase has the opportunity to learn some basic vocabulary from the focus country, through tasks and conversation. Pupils will learn about the country’s history and geography, food and drink, art, culture, music and sport. STEM activities will also be incorporated where possible allowing for cross-curricular links.

During each focus day, pupils will get to ‘visit’ a themed café within school; here, they will taste traditional food from the country and practice their speaking skills in context. Alongside this, native speakers from each of the chosen countries will remotely teach key vocabulary to our pupils.

Opportunities to visit some countries on residential visits will substantiate and contextualise pupils’ learning, as well as provide an understanding of the wider world.

Every pupil will, during their Sutton journey, learn about fifteen different countries. It is our hope that pupils gain enjoyment from Modern Foreign Languages, begin to access new skills and further their cultural awareness.
