Phase Focus

This fortnight we bring you updates from our Hills phase.

Welcome to this edition of our Hills Phase newsletter, where we highlight the creativity, determination and exciting adventures of our pupils! Read on to find out what we have been up to...

In Core Studies, we have been exploring the vital role physical exercise plays in maintaining both our physical health and mental well-being. Through engaging activities and discussions, students in 9H1 and 10H1 have developed a deeper understanding of how movement impacts the body. They have been able to observe and recognise changes in their own bodies, particularly by noticing an increase in their pulse rate after physical activity. Did you know that the NHS recommends an average of 60 minutes of physical activity each day across the week for children? We have taken our learning outside and had great fun with a variety of PE equipment. This hands-on approach has helped pupils connect their learning with real-life experiences, reinforcing the benefits of staying active for a healthier mind and body.

In our Pathway lessons, pupils in 10H1 and 11H1 have been putting their research and practical skills to the test by exploring the product design process. They have been investigating how different products are created, considering factors such as target audiences, product types, and the steps involved in bringing a product to life. Through discussions and hands-on activities, pupils have been developing a deeper understanding of how everyday items are designed and marketed. Looking ahead, they will be applying their knowledge in an exciting real-world project—creating their own dog food biscuits! Pupils will not only be making the biscuits but also designing unique packaging to appeal to pet owners. This project will challenge them to think creatively about branding, presentation, and functionality, bringing together all the skills they have been developing in their lessons. We can't wait to see their innovative designs and delicious dog-friendly treats come to life!

Pupils in 9H1, 10H1 and 11H1 have also been enjoying their Science STEM activity over the past few weeks. They have successfully designed and created their own version of Guess Who! We are very impressed with their teamwork, engagement and problem-solving skills to create ‘Guess the Creature’, featuring a variety of animals to identify.

Pupils in 9H2 and 10H2 have been developing their communication skills by asking and answering questions all about the seaside as part of our exciting English topic, Stormy Seas,. To bring the topic to life, we held a beach experience day, where students immersed themselves in hands-on activities, including sand and water play, as well as engaging role-play scenarios. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils to deepen their understanding of seaside life while having fun.

In Maths, pupils across all classes recently completed our topic on calendars and time. Pupils explored time-telling in an interactive and creative way, using Play-Doh clocks to help them read and write the time to the hour and half past. These practical activities not only reinforced key mathematical concepts but also made learning an enjoyable and memorable experience.

In English, pupils in 9H1, 10H1, and 11H1 have been thoroughly enjoying our Modern Theatre topic, where they have been studying the play version of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. To bring the story to life, pupils have taken part in an exciting chocolate tasting session, exploring different flavors and textures while discussing how sensory experiences influence storytelling. Building on this, they have also researched careers at the Cadbury Factory, the real-life inspiration behind Willy Wonka’s magical world. As part of their writing practice, pupils honed their letter-writing skills by drafting job applications for roles within the factory. This really helped in preparing pupils for their ‘real’ writing assessments. Pupils have worked so hard to produce some wonderful pieces of writing.

Now, pupils are channeling their creativity into an exciting new challenge—designing their own unique chocolate product! They are currently working on crafting persuasive advertisements to promote their creations, using engaging language and eye-catching designs to make their sweet treats irresistible. We can't wait to see their final ideas come to life!

In addition to the wonderful learning taking place in the classroom, pupils have also engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities.

Beyond the fantastic learning happening in the classroom, pupils have also been actively involved in a range of exciting extracurricular activities.

World Book Day – Pupils celebrated their love of reading through storytelling sessions, creative book-themed activities, and even dressing up as their favorite literary characters. It was a wonderful opportunity to ignite imaginations and share a passion for books!

Sutton Stage Stars – Some of our talented pupils took to the stage, showcasing their acting and performance skills in a fantastic drama event. Their confidence and creativity truly shone through, making it a memorable experience for all involved. We must also congratulate all pupils who supported this by helping to make merchandise which was sold on the night.

After-School Clubs – From sports and arts to music and drama, our after-school clubs have provided students with enriching opportunities to develop new skills, build friendships, and explore their interests in a fun and supportive environment. These experiences have not only complemented classroom learning but have also encouraged teamwork, self-expression, and personal growth.

We are immensely proud of our students for their enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication in every activity. Their hard work and curiosity make Hills Phase a dynamic and inspiring place to learn. Stay tuned for more exciting updates in our next newsletter!

Whole school events

Sutton Stage Stars Shine Again!

Our annual Sutton Stage Stars event was a fantastic celebration of talent, teamwork, and togetherness. It was truly heartwarming to see the whole school come together for this special occasion.

As a SEN school, we understand the incredible power of music and performing arts as a form of therapy, especially for those who may find communication challenging. This event not only showcases talent but also boosts confidence, encourages self-expression, and brings joy to everyone involved.

A huge thank you to all who took part—our amazing pupils, dedicated staff, and of course, our wonderful judges, Mrs. Edward-Smith and team. And a special congratulations to this year’s winners, who brought the house down with their performance of Bob Marley’s classic "Don’t Worry About a Thing."

Well done, everyone! We can’t wait to do it all again next year! 🎀🎢✨

Autism Awareness Week: Celebrating and Supporting Unique Minds

At Sutton Special School, Autism Awareness Week is more than just a campaign—it’s a reflection of our daily commitment to understanding, supporting, and celebrating the incredible diversity of our students. With a vast majority of our pupils being autistic, we see first-hand the wide spectrum of strengths, challenges, and unique perspectives that autism brings.

This week, we are dedicated to breaking down stereotypes and fostering a deeper understanding of autism. No two autistic individuals are the same, and it’s crucial to embrace and champion their individuality. From enhancing sensory-friendly environments to promoting inclusive communication, we strive to create a space where every student feels valued and empowered.

Join us in raising awareness and advocating for meaningful support. For more ways to get involved, visit here.

Let’s work together to celebrate neurodiversity and ensure that every autistic individual is seen, heard, and understood. πŸŒˆπŸ’™

The HAF programme offers free activities, sports, creative sessions, and nutritious meals for children who receive free school meals.

This is a great chance for children to stay active, socialise, and engage in fun experiences over the break. Spaces fill up quickly, so we encourage families to check availability and book as soon as possible.
