Woodland School

To support the delivery of the Enrichment/Duke of Edinburgh curriculum, Woodland School will be delivered across all three phases.

What is Woodland School?

Woodland School is an innovative educational approach that focuses on outdoor learning in natural settings, such as woodlands, forests, or other natural environments. The program encourages children to engage in activities that support their physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Through regular and prolonged exposure to the natural world, children develop a deep connection to nature and a range of life skills, including problem-solving, resilience, and creativity.

Why Woodland School?

At Sutton, we believe in providing a well-rounded education that goes beyond the confines of traditional classrooms. Woodland School offers several unique benefits for your child:

  • Holistic Development: Through outdoor exploration and play, your child will develop physical fitness, creativity, and emotional well-being.

  • Environmental Awareness: Woodland School instils a lifelong appreciation for nature and a sense of responsibility for the environment, fostering a generation of environmental stewards.

  • Critical Thinking: Nature-based activities encourage problem-solving and decision-making skills in a real-world context.

  • Resilience: Facing challenges and taking calculated risks in a safe environment helps build self-confidence and resilience.

Program Details:

  • The Woodland School program will take place once every 4-6 weeks. Class teachers will notify you when your child's session is.

  • Each session will be led by qualified Forest School practitioners who are experienced in outdoor education, child development, and safety.

  • Your child will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, including shelter building, rope work, woodland art, conservation woodland projects, basic fire lighting, team building activities and simple cooking.

  • Woodland School runs in all weather (if safe to do so) and children will be expected to take part in all sessions.

Safety and Supervision:

The safety of your child is our utmost priority. Our practitioner is trained to ensure a safe and secure learning environment. We can provide your child with appropriate footwear if need (pupils are welcome to bring their own wellies). If your child has their own waterproof coat, please also bring this to lessons. As the seasons change, your child may need additional layers of clothing.

Next Steps:

You will receive a parent mail from your child's class teacher to inform you when their next Woodland School lesson takes place. If you have any questions regarding Woodland School, please contact Mr Edney Evans (cedneyevans@sutton.dudley.sch.uk)
