Life Skills
Curriculum Intent
At Sutton we aim to create a happy, purposeful and supportive environment where pupils are enabled to become successful learners, develop their full potential and achieve the highest educational standards they can. Life Skills equip students with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, productive and balanced lives. Life Skills contributes to personal development by helping pupils to build their confidence and self – esteem. Developing an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to work with others will help students to form and maintain good relationships, develop the essential skills for future employability and better enjoy and manage their lives.
Curriculum Implementation
Life skills is delivered across the school in all years and phases. In Trees phase Life Skills forms part of ‘practical’ time, delivered by the class-based teacher. Much of the delivery takes part within the classroom, with opportunities to use the bespoke facilities in the Life Skills Room throughout the year. Hills and Rivers pupils receive a dedicated lesson every week which utilises the Life Skills room and is taught by a subject specialist.
Topics covered in Life Skills include but is not limited to personal hygiene, how to wash and iron clothes, looking after a home, safety in the kitchen, basic cooking, healthy Living, community action and environmental awareness.
Sutton maintains a dedicated Life Skills room and organises off site activities throughout the year to support the development of pupils’ culture capital.
