Physical Education

Intent

To provide our pupils with the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of sporting activities and games. To promote the ethos of sport and physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle and as an important aspect of promoting wellbeing.

Implementation

Physical Education at Sutton School consists of a double lesson each week across all phases. Pupils experience a broad range of inclusive sporting activities and games which include invasion games, net games, fitness, athletics, striking and fielding each year. Pupils are taught key skills within our sporting activities, which are continuously developed each year. Pupils will learn the importance of rules, respect and teamwork through both core PE lessons and extra-curricular activities; of which we offer both at break/lunch times, after-school clubs and internal/external sport events. Swimming and water safety sessions are delivered as part of our curriculum during year 8.

We pride ourselves on delivering an inclusive PE curriculum, and work with outside agencies to tailor programs to support the individual needs of pupils. This includes our ‘Get Moving Program’ and ‘’Bikeability’ training. In the summer term we hold an all-inclusive Sports Day with a focus on both fun and achievement.

As pupils progress through into Hills and Rivers, they can expand their knowledge and skills in Physical Education by working towards gaining a vocational qualification. This includes BTEC Level 1 Sports, WJEC Entry2/3 Healthy Living and ASDAN Entry 1 Personal Progress. In addition, pupils also gain a certificate in the ‘Physical’ section which supports the progression to the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
