The Woodland at Sutton School

Woodland learning zone

So after weeks of hard work and planning its nearly complete. It will be an amazing new adventure for outdoor learning at Sutton School. The Woodland expands on Sutton Schools original site providing additional learning spaces for pupils to learn and explore.

Over the years to come Sutton School will be able to build on the existing learning zone and add exciting new features e.g. mud kitchen. The Woodland zone will allow pupils the opportunity to be at one with nature. It provides a stimulating natural environment shaded from the sun with plenty of hidden gems to explore.

Sutton School are currently working with the woodland trust to plant hedge row and native bulbs across the Woodland Zone. Pupils have also been actively involved in the planning and development of the project, contributing ideas to the planners and builders to create a unique space for them to learn. It has been exciting for the pupils to see the project develop as it has been built and watch the progress first hand. Pupils actively engaged when tree surgeon came to inspect and make safe the tress, explaining how to manage and encourage good growth of the very neglected trees.

Whilst the pupils have played a big part in its development the local community have came together to supply a storage shed and waterproof clothing including Coats and Wellies for the pupils.

The Woodland zone has been transformed from an unused area of woodland into a creative learning environment, where pupils have the freedom to learn subjects like BTec Landbase studies and other curriculum related topics.

The space also provides a place to rest and relax. The mental health and well-being of our pupils is improved through quiet and relaxing places. Sutton School is also planning on introducing a cooking area in the Woodland allowing pupils to have lunch breaks in an open environment.
